Spring Trend: The Camouflage Jacket

Spring 2013 Trend- Camo Street Style
street style photo: luckymag.com

Inspired by military fatigues, the camouflage print has been a huge trend this season.  It’s not uncommon to see a camo print jacket worn over black or white tees with jeans and flats.  I’ve also seen a lot of camo print pants paired with tees and blazers.  The 2013 spring season has offered more feminine injections to this classic trend with the addition of high heels and bold colors. I love the idea of mixing dressy and casual, so I found this combination of camo and coral to be quite refreshing!

Surprising Spring Trend: Velvet

It’s okay to be a burnout… if you’re velvet!
Spring Trend- Burnout Velvet

Did you know that it’s perfectly acceptable in fashion to wear velvet during the spring and summer months?  Just the word “velvet” makes me feel warm… why would I want to wear velvet when it’s hot outside?  Because burnout velvet can be paper thin and super soft… it breathes, drapes and wears well, whereas velvets of yore tended to be thick, heavy and stiff.  I just bought this lovely gold and grey striped burnout velvet dress for a steal at The Poppy Boutique.  I added a gold wide leather tie belt and bohemian statement necklace and wore this ensemble to my Junior League’s annual dinner… otherwise known as a cocktail dress competition where we all win!!!

Runway Translation: The Bare Midriff

Spring 2013 Runway Trend- Bare Midriff
runway photos: style.com

Here’s a spring trend that dominated the runways and simply will not go away on the streets… the bare midriff!  You may think this trend only works on the young, thin, modelesque types, and you’d be totally correct.  I do not recommend you try this one unless you are completely comfortable with showing some skin.  Here’s why I can’t hate on this look- because if done correctly it looks fabulous!  My two rules for pulling off the peek-a-boo belly style are #1 make sure the skirt is high-waisted enough to cover your belly button and #2 the bottom of the crop top should almost touch the waistline of the skirt so you just show a sliver of skin.  Here’s my dressy version…

Runway Translation: Fluorescent Frocks

Spring 2013 Runway Trend- Bright Yellow Dress
runway photos: style.com

Simone Rocha, Nanette Lepore & Versace were just a few of the designers who showed bold pops of neon and fluorescent hues on the runways this spring.  This trend is a bit tricky because it’s easy to go overboard and find yourself looking like a fashion victim of the 1980’s.  If you’re brave enough to go for a bright yellow dress like the looks above be sure to soften the glow with a complimentary shade of turquoise or pink… even black tends to dial down the bright factor a bit.

But seriously folks… she’s a steal at $2,800!!!  Good-night everyone. I’ll be here all week!

While sourcing on net-a-porter.com I was curious to see what the most expensive high heel sandals they have looked like.  I searched sandals and put them in price order viewing the highest first. For the sake of my collage, I removed the knee-high gladiator sandals (at $2,700 and $1,800).  Starting with our special guest in blue, follow the dollar sign below to see who else comes in at the ‘Oh-my-god-how-much-did-you-say-those-were?’ mark…

Runway Translation: The Printed Pant Suit

Spring 2013 Runway Trend- Printed Pant Suits
runway photos- style.com

The Spring 2013 runway shows provided plenty of androgyny in the form of power suits and pant suits.  Designers like Mary Katrantzou, Yves Saint Laurent & Balmain (among others) kept it feminine with form-fitted craftsmanship and soft fabrics in matching prints.  The skinny pant was a key component for achieving a powerful, yet lady-like look.  For a casual daytime suit, I like the look of seersucker.  Here’s my take on a classic Spring ensemble…

Runway Translation: Sheer Fabrics

Sheer Runway Spring 2013

Sheer, lightweight fabrics graced the runways of Roberto Cavalli, Akris, Donna Karan, Tom Ford, Rick Owens, and many other talented designers.  And what better way to represent the Spring season than to show some skin? But if being scantily clad is not your style, try pairing a semi-sheer dress with a jacket and you’ll still turn heads…
