Tampa Bay Fashion Week 2013 Runway Presentation

Wow!  What a week!  The 6th Annual Tampa Bay Fashion Week was a whirlwind of stylish receptions, designer and model parties, vendor and exhibitor boutiques, a blogger conference and fashion shows… the proceeds from which will benefit Shoes for the Cure.  There were so many opportunities to learn about the local fashion scene as well as brush up on everything from the history of fashion to kid couture to what’s hot in bridal wear… literally something for everyone.

As always, my favorite part of any fashion week are the runway shows.  Tampa Bay Fashion Week’s presentation of the 2014 Spring/Summer Collections at the Hilton Tampa Downtown did not disappoint!  I went as a guest of my friend Emily from Deocapac Designs, one of the sponsors of the event.  Though we had great seats (there wasn’t a bad seat in the house), I quickly positioned myself on the front lines, at the very end of the runway, a few feet from the models, camera in-hand.  I just couldn’t help myself.  Here are some of my favorite looks from the show…

Lovely Lace and Ladylike…

Lovelace Gucci Dress Givenchy Sandals

I saw this press photo of Amanda Seyfried attending the London screening of her new movie, and I could not get over the adorable dress.  It’s from Gucci’s pre-Spring/Summer 2014 collection.  I adore the vintage silhouette with its housewife charm, but wait!  …it’s sheer!  I love that the underpinnings are quite modest, as far as those go.  I love the choice of red lipstick against her pale complexion and I love-love the navy polka-dotness of it all! … and don’t get me started on the Givenchy platform sandals!  All. Day. Long.

Here are some similar dresses for your consumption…

Worth New York Fall 2013

035 (1024x704)

How lucky am I that this is what I do?  I get lots of calls for blogging ideas… well, not lots, but a few… once or twice.  Anyway, when Worth New York- Tampa Agency Owner Angier Miller called about her Fall collection hanging on freshly set-up racks in her South Tampa showroom, I got that warm and fuzzy fashion feeling.  Worth New York is a couture-quality line of separates… I own one of their dresses and it’s timeless.  As I learned while styling a few of my favorite looks, these pieces are not only luxurious and well-made, this year’s Fall collection is deceivingly lightweight, which rocks for this Florida girl.

Worth Flag Work Look Duo

The tapestry pencil skirt above is much lighter than it looks, and I love the overdose of prints in this work-perfect ensemble.  Below, the clever cape blouse and animal print slim pants serve as the backdrop for a bold pop of color.  And the long sleeve chiffon shirt dress with sheer panels spoke to me.  It said, “I’m here.  Where’s my martini?”…

Fall Runway Translation: PRADA

-Mid-century silhouette complete with clearly defined waist and knee-skimming hemline
-Boatneck henley tee layered beneath rich fall fabrics
-Chunky metallic platform sandal
-Large fabric tote

Here’s my version…

Ball Gown, Meet Biker Jacket…

There’s something so intriguing about the unexpected combination of lady-like refinement and rough-and-tumble naughtiness!  I love pairing a soft, feminine gown or dress with something dark and tough like a leather biker jacket.  It says, “Would you care for some tea… or perhaps a knuckle sandwich?”

Biker Chic ModelsOn a recent visit to Neiman Marcus at International Plaza, I had the pleasure of styling my own ‘Biker Chic’ vignette with the help of models Sue and Erika.  I had a blast scoping the floor and pulling looks… landing on my two favorite ‘ladies with attitude’ ensembles.  I totally want to go wherever these gals are going…

Biker Chic Models Cluster

The shoppable ‘Biker Chic’ look below is a great way to experiment with the juxtaposition of a black leather jacket and a soft, flowy chiffon gown.  Let’s say you have a bride’s maid dress and you’re not sure why you’ve kept it… NOW is why!  Add a girly statement necklace and drape the biker jacket over your shoulders for a more delicate look…

Oh, To Walk In Those Shoes…

Lanvin Blue High Heels
Here she is ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm welcome to the hottest high-heel sandal on the fashion market, the one, the only… one of the most expensive five inch platforms to come off the runways this spring… the shoes that make my toes tingle with envy and my legs long for their touch… give a round of applause for our guest on RunwayTranslator today, Lanvin’s crystal embellished blue suede sandals everybody!!! (the crowd goes wild)

But seriously folks… she’s a steal at $2,800!!!  Good-night everyone. I’ll be here all week!

While sourcing on net-a-porter.com I was curious to see what the most expensive high heel sandals they have looked like.  I searched sandals and put them in price order viewing the highest first. For the sake of my collage, I removed the knee-high gladiator sandals (at $2,700 and $1,800).  Starting with our special guest in blue, follow the dollar sign below to see who else comes in at the ‘Oh-my-god-how-much-did-you-say-those-were?’ mark…

Designer Inspiration: Alice + Olivia

Okay, so I adore this leopard print ensemble by Alice + Olivia.  The dress, the bag, the shoes… perfection!  The price… a bit out of my league.  These three designer pieces total nearly $1,200 and I just can’t go there.  So, like any determined fashion stalker, I found a few amazing alternatives that convey this same look for a fraction of the price (13/100 actually)! I’ve posted both looks below… the real thing for those with deeper wallets, and the ‘close-enough’ version for gals like me…

Runway Translation: The Printed Pant Suit

Spring 2013 Runway Trend- Printed Pant Suits
runway photos- style.com

The Spring 2013 runway shows provided plenty of androgyny in the form of power suits and pant suits.  Designers like Mary Katrantzou, Yves Saint Laurent & Balmain (among others) kept it feminine with form-fitted craftsmanship and soft fabrics in matching prints.  The skinny pant was a key component for achieving a powerful, yet lady-like look.  For a casual daytime suit, I like the look of seersucker.  Here’s my take on a classic Spring ensemble…

Runway Translation: Sheer Fabrics

Sheer Runway Spring 2013
runway photos: style.com

Sheer, lightweight fabrics graced the runways of Roberto Cavalli, Akris, Donna Karan, Tom Ford, Rick Owens, and many other talented designers.  And what better way to represent the Spring season than to show some skin? But if being scantily clad is not your style, try pairing a semi-sheer dress with a jacket and you’ll still turn heads…

Runway Translation: Black & White Contrast

Black and White Runway Spring 2013
runway photos- style.com

The runways were alive with bold color contrasts for Spring and none were more prevalent than the classic black and white combo.  Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Narciso Rodriguez, Chanel, Valentino and countless other designers showed us just how these opposites can attract.  I love to mix prints like the Marc Jacobs look pictured above, but if you want to keep it simple and still take part in this Spring trend try an ensemble like this one…
