Runway Translation: Trending Tribal

Be ready for plenty of international influence in fashion this Spring buying season!  One of the most popular fashion trends for Spring takes its colorful inspiration from traditional tribal garments found in exotic lands around the globe…

Trending Tribal 2014

If wearing an African Aso-Oke (traditional dress and hat wrap) is not your style, you can still become an honorary style tribe member and tap into this trend by incorporating a touch of print into your ensemble.  Check out my runway translation below…

Trending Tribal-Shola Flat Ensemble

This look revolves around the ballet flats by Shola Designs… notice the fun African motif.  When paired with a black wrap top, linen shorts, and woven handbag these comfy flats provide the perfect touch of tribal inspiration for a cohesive look that’s subtle and on trend.  *Shop the look below.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Shola’s designer, Shola Yusuf, at a Trunk Show hosted by Farrah Estrella of Estrella Fashion Report.  Shola is a local entrepreneur here in Tampa and originally hails from Nigeria.  I love her premier collection of shoes!  So much in fact that I couldn’t resist buying a gorgeous pair of turquoise platform stilettos.  I can’t wait to feature them in a future blog post.  Check out Shola’s beautiful traditional African ensemble…

*Fun Fashion Factoid:
“Traditional African clothing is generally very colorful. These colors actually have meaning. The yellows and golds tend to mean wealth and fertility because it is the color of a precious metal and the yolk of an egg. Red is viewed as the color of blood and tension. Blue is the color of peace and love. Green is the color of life and prosperity.”  ~Ask.com

We’ve Got Spirit, Yes We Do…

Are you a fashionable female with a penchant for football?  Well good luck trying not to look like one of the boys on game day!  For the gal who likes to show her team spirit without wearing a linebacker’s official jersey there aren’t a lot of stylish options on the market.  When I saw this NFL ad in last month’s Vogue, I was instantly inspired…

Why not mix it up a bit?  There’s no need to don your boyfriend’s jeans and sneakers just because you like to play armchair quarterback on the weekends.  Capitalize on your femininity and win the trophy for best looking lady at the tailgate party!  Take a couple official team pieces, like a fitted tee or hoodie and a ball cap, throw some silk drawstring pants and high heels into the formation, layer on a few pieces of bling-bling, and you’ve got a winning play!FSU Ensemble

Celine Fall 2013- Runway Translation

“Really elegant but weird; almost nerdy but perverse.”
~ Photographer Juergen Teller describing the Celine Fall Collection

Celine Fall 2013

My top three looks from the Celine Fall Collection had several key elements in common.  If you’re a fan of the simple, elegant, mid-century modern made contemporary looks above, and you’d like to give it a go, be sure to include the following elements in your ensemble:

Color- Soft and monochromatic.  Top and skirt should be solid and matching in color.
Texture- Every piece should want to make you touch it!  Go for wooly, cozy, furry, etc.
Shape- Boxy on top with a fit & flare skirt that falls below the knee.
Booties- Find one that hits below the mid-calf and fits like a second skin.

Lovely Lace and Ladylike…

Lovelace Gucci Dress Givenchy Sandals

I saw this press photo of Amanda Seyfried attending the London screening of her new movie, and I could not get over the adorable dress.  It’s from Gucci’s pre-Spring/Summer 2014 collection.  I adore the vintage silhouette with its housewife charm, but wait!  …it’s sheer!  I love that the underpinnings are quite modest, as far as those go.  I love the choice of red lipstick against her pale complexion and I love-love the navy polka-dotness of it all! … and don’t get me started on the Givenchy platform sandals!  All. Day. Long.

Ball Gown, Meet Biker Jacket…

There’s something so intriguing about the unexpected combination of lady-like refinement and rough-and-tumble naughtiness!  I love pairing a soft, feminine gown or dress with something dark and tough like a leather biker jacket.  It says, “Would you care for some tea… or perhaps a knuckle sandwich?”

Biker Chic ModelsOn a recent visit to Neiman Marcus at International Plaza, I had the pleasure of styling my own ‘Biker Chic’ vignette with the help of models Sue and Erika.  I had a blast scoping the floor and pulling looks… landing on my two favorite ‘ladies with attitude’ ensembles.  I totally want to go wherever these gals are going…

Biker Chic Models Cluster

The shoppable ‘Biker Chic’ look below is a great way to experiment with the juxtaposition of a black leather jacket and a soft, flowy chiffon gown.  Let’s say you have a bride’s maid dress and you’re not sure why you’ve kept it… NOW is why!  Add a girly statement necklace and drape the biker jacket over your shoulders for a more delicate look…

Independence Day

Vogue, point of view, July 2013 Issue:

The average American closet is a creative cauldron.  Who would we like to be this morning- a preppy in shrunken blazer and driving loafers?  An haute hippie, trailing handkerchief hems along with the sound of bangles?  An eighties rock-‘n’-roller in black lace?

Standing out as an individual is what we all want and need.  The key is to home in on your own distinct look- and then write your own rules around it.  Forget what anyone else says or wears- this is the true soul of chic.

Independence Dayphotos: Pinterest

The word independent means ‘not subject to control by others: self-governing.’  Independence Day fashion is not about how many variations of red, white and blue we can combine to create a patriotic ensemble.  It’s not about wearing an American flag or the strategic drape of its stars and stripes.  To this fashion-obsessed lover of the U.S. of A., fashion on Independence Day represents the nature of who we are as a nation; self-governing.  I am inspired by the independent thinkers of fashion, the mavericks who break the mold and push the envelope like those pictured above.  I love the motorcycle jacket with flat sandals and a girly skirt… and  how about the floor length skirt with a flannel shirt?  Brilliant!  I was so inspired by the middle look that I styled a shoppable evening version…
